Period of the farmer cheesemakers, 1790-1900.
Camembert, first created in the manor
of Beaumoncel, would then be manufactured exclusively by milk
producers who became cheesemakers.
For more than one century, the descendants
of Marie HAREL produced this popular and appreciated cheese.

- 1791 - Invention of Camembert
by Marie Harel
During the French Revolution a recalcitrant
priest from Brie arrived in the Manor of Beaumoncel in the village
of Camembert and was hidden there by a farmer woman called Marie
Harel. Following the advice of this priest, she created Camembert,
a kind of cheese, with rind, ripened over several days. Her children
and grandchild (The PAYNEL and SEREY families..) continued to
manufacture Camembert. |
- 1850 - Inauguration
of the Paris-Lisieux-Caen Railway.
Cheese production in Normandy would
increase considerably after the opening of this railway. As a
matter of fact, the time necessary for Camembert to reach markets
stalls in Paris went from 3 days by diligence to 6 hours by train. |

- 1890 - Invention
of the wooden box by the engineer Mr RIDEL
This box would help in the safe transportation
of the cheese during long travel. Until that date the cheese
was carried on straw layers and could only travel short distances. |
